Indian Forest Service

Indian Forest Service exam is conducted by the UPSC to select candidates for the IFS cadre. UPSC recruits candidates every year for the post of IFS. The Indian Forest Service exam has three stages the Prelims , the Mains and the Interview. The preliminary exam is as same as the civil service exam conducted by the UPSC.The mains exam is not as same as the civil services exam,it is conducted differently by the UPSC .

Notification

The notification for the Indian Forest Service exam is published in the beginning every year. In the year 2017, UPSC released its notification for the recruitment of IFS officers on 22/02/2017.This year UPSC had notified a total vacancy of 110.

Educational Qualification

The candidate must hold a Bachelor's degree with at least one of the subjects namely Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics and Zoology or a Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Forestry or in Engineering of any of Universities incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification.

Age Limit

A candidate who wishes to apply for the post Indian Forest Service must have attained the age of 21 yrs and maximum the age of 32 yrs .The upper age limit provided will be relax able.

Age Relaxations

(i)                  upto a maximum of five years if a candidate belongs to a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe.

(ii)                 upto a maximum of three years in the case of candidates belonging to Other Backward Classes who are eligible to avail of reservation applicable to such candidates.

(iii)                upto a maximum of five years if a candidate had ordinarily been domiciled in the State of Jammu & Kashmir during the period from the 1st January, 1980 to the 31st day of December, 1989.

(iv)               upto a maximum of three years in the case of Defence Services personnel disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area and released as a consequence thereof: (v) upto a maximum of five years in the case of ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs who have rendered at least five years Military Service as on 1st August, 2017 and have been released (i) on completion of assignment (including those whose assignment is due to be completed within one year from 1st August, 2017) otherwise than by way of dismissal or discharge on account of misconduct or inefficiency, or (ii) on account of physical disability attributable to Military Service, or (iii) on invalidment.

(v)                 upto a maximum of five years in the case of ECOs/SSCOs who have completed an initial period of assignment of five years of Military Service as on 1st August, 2017and whose assignment has been extended beyond five years and in whose case the Ministry of Defence issues a certificate that they can apply for civil employment and that they will be released on three month's notice on selection from the date of receipt of offer of appointment.

(vi)               upto a maximum of 10 years in the case of Low Vision and Hearing Impaired persons.

 Exam Fee

Candidates applying (excepting Female/SC/ST/PH candidates who are exempted from payment of fee) for Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination are required to pay a fee of Rs.100/- (Rupees One Hundred only) either by depositing the money in any Branch of SBI by cash, or by using net banking facility of SBI, State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur/State Bank of Hyderabad/State Bank of Mysore/State Bank of Patiala/State Bank of Travancore or by using Visa/Master Credit/Debit card.

Exam Pattern

Union Public Service Commission conducts the exam of Indian Forest Service exam in two stages; Preliminary exam and Mains exam. The preliminary exam is same as the exam conducted for Civil Services exam by the UPSC.

The pattern of mains exam is different from that of civil services exam .After the Mains exam candidates are made to appear for the Personality Test. The complete patterns for the Prelims and Mains exam are given below:-

The candidates will be interviewed by a group of unbiased observers who will examine the candidates’ records and documents. The maximum marks allotted for the personality test is 300 marks.

Number of Attempts

Every candidate appearing at the Examination, who is otherwise eligible, shall be permitted six attempts at the examination.
