The College is named after the great freedom fighter and social reformer Sri. T.K. Madhavan. He was born and brought up in a prominent Ezhava family in Karthikappally Taluk. From the days of his childhood, he became conscious of the outrageous insults and ill treatment suffered by his fellow beings under the rigors of the caste system.

It was a dream come true to the citizens of the locale when Sree Narayana College, Chathannur was founded in the name of the great philosopher, saint, seer and social reformer, Sree Narayana Guru. Bearing in letter and spirit the lofty ideals of the Guru, this institution of higher learning established on 31 August 1981 under the Sree Narayana Trusts, Kollam, has been imparting knowledge to the entire society, with the vision of “Liberation through Education”.

This institution was established with Arts subject courses of under-graduate wing of University College, Thiruvananthapuram in 1993-1994, with minimum infrastructural facilities. During 1996-97 all under graduate courses were shifted back to University College Thiruvananthapuram.
