An epigraphist is a person who decodes the writing from the ancient centuries. They interprets the writings and events written in clays, pillars etc. After identifying the writings they will classify according to the ages, civilizations and cultural contexts. The person who decodes the ancient languages of different culture is called an epigraphist.
An epigraphist helps the archeologists to read the writings and it will help them to identify the era. Gradually the archeologists will be able to find the era and will be able to relate to the objects. An epigraphist must also learn to preserve the manuscripts for the various generations to come.
There is no particular eligibility to become an epigraphist you can join for epigraphy courses right after examination
Step 1 To pursue any course in Epigraphy the person needs to finish his/her 12th std with good marks
Step 2 To pursue your studies in epigraphy one must finish his post graduation in subjects like history, archeology, art history, etc.
Step 3 After studying pg courses you can join for epigraphic studies in various institutes.

An epigraphist will get opportunies to work with government institutions. You can work with the central government but the recruitment will be through only competitive exams conducted by UPSC, Archeological survey of India. You can work their in good posts.
The salary of an epigraphist will range from 15,000 to 20,000.If you are working in government institutions then you will get a salary from 30,000 to 55,000.
