Pulmonologist Career

A pulmonologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions and diseases associated with the lungs.  It involves the examination of bronchial tubes and the upper respiratory tract , including the nose , pharynx and throat . A pulmonologist usually treats disorders like patients suffering from respiratory related disorders and conditions. Some of the most common disease that they come across are chronic asthma, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, hemoptysis, obstructive sleep apnea, pleural effusion, sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, and lung cancer.

They can also look into sleeping disorders which will be mostly be linked to respiratory ailments .The habit of smoking among  men has increased the risk of lung ailments and cancers. There are tens and millions of people in India who are under the risk of lung cancers. The worsening of the air quality in the India busy cities has brought more men and women including children under respiratory problems. In such a polluted environment, pulmonologist have become necessary. 

Pulmonologist Eligibility

The student must pass 12th std with major subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology to write the NEET exam (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test). NEET exam will determine the eligibility of a person to pursue MBBS course.

Pulmonologist Recruitment Process

Step 1 Earn a bachelor’s degree in MBBS from a recognized medial college in India.

Step 2 You can specialize in Pulmonary Medicine after MBBS to practice as a pulmonologist .MD in Pulmonary Medicine if for three years

Being a pulmonologist is a very specialized position. Pulmonologist can be seen practicing in hospitals as well as in private clinics. Some do give their time for researches as there are cases of new respiratory ailments due to high pollution. They can also take up the role of a teacher in medical universities. A pulmonologist will also have to work in the cardio department in case of cardiopulmonary attacks.

The salary will depend on many factors .If a doctor is working in a government hospital’s then the remuneration will be much higher. If you can start a private clinic then also there will be much better salary than the other hospitals if you can be available 24*7. In private hospitals monthly salary will be Rs 70,000-Rs 80,000.
