  • 2nd India-Russia Strategic Economic Dialogue begins

    The second India-Russia Strategic Economic Dialogue (IRSED), which took place here on Wednesday, focused on six core areas of cooperation, including the development of the agro-Processing sector, trade and transport.

    The second meeting of the IRSED was held under the chairmanship of Vice-Chairman of the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog, Rajiv Kumar, and Russia's Deputy Minister of Economic Development, Timur Maksimov.


    The meeting focused on development of transport infrastructure and technologies, small and medium business support, digital transformation and frontier technologies, cooperation in trade, banking, finance, and industry, and tourism and connectivity, according to the statement.

  • Phase-II DBT in fertilizer subsidy launched

    The Centre Wednesday launched three new technology initiatives to transfer over Rs 70,000-crore fertiliser subsidy directly to farmers' bank accounts.

    These initiatives are -- a dashboard with details of fertiliser supply, availability and requirement at national, state and district level; advanced version of point of sale (PoS) software and a desktop PoS version.

    These are part of the government's effort to transfer the fertiliser subsidy directly to farmers' bank accounts in the second phase of direct benefit transfer (DBT).

  • Connaught Place 9th most expensive office location in the world

    New Delhi's Connaught Place (CP) is the ninth most expensive office location in the world with an annual rent of nearly USD 144 per sq ft, according to property consultant CBRE.

    CP, located in the heart of the national capital, was at the ninth position even last year.

    In its annual Global Prime Office Occupancy Costs survey, CBRE tracks the cost of leasing prime office space globally.

  • Russia launched Soyuz Carrier Rocket with 33 satellites

    Russia successfully launched its Soyuz-2.1a carrier rocket on Friday with a hydrometeorological satellite and 32 small satellites, the Russian state space corporation Roscosmos said.

    The rocket blasted off at 8.41 a.m. (local time) from the Vostochny spaceport in the Far Eastern Amur Region.

  • France to impose green tax on plane tickets from 2020

    The French government is to impose a tax of up to €18 on plane tickets for all flights from airports in France to fund less-polluting transportation projects, a Minister said on Tuesday.

    The move, which will take effect from 2020, will see a tax of €1.5 imposed on economy-class tickets on internal flights and those within Europe, with the highest tariff applied to business-class travellers flying outside the bloc, Transport Minister Elisabeth Borne said.

  • Sri Lanka eliminates measles

    The World Health Organization announced Sri Lanka has eliminated measles, interrupting transmission of the indigenous virus that causes the killer childhood disease.

    “Sri Lanka’s achievement comes at a time when globally measles cases are increasing. The country’s success demonstrates its commitment, and the determination of its health workforce and parents to protect children against measles,” said Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Regional Director WHO South-East Asia, congratulating the island nation.

  • VNL signs pact with Vietnam to develop digital villages

    Telecom equipment and solutions provider Vihaan Networks Ltd (VNL) has inked a pact with Vietnam to offer solutions for advancing rural connectivity by developing digital villages in Vietnam’s underserved areas, the company said.

    A visiting delegation, led by Phan Xuan Dung, MP, Chairman of Committee on Science, Technology and Environmental Affairs, Vietnam, expressed interest in connecting unserved and underserved remote villages in Vietnam through solar-based cellular and broadband solution — a similar model developed by VNL in Karenda, a village in Rajasthan, situated 80 km from Delhi.

  • Deposits in Jan Dhan Yojana accounts crosses Rs 1 lakh crore

    Deposits in bank accounts opened under Jan Dhan scheme, launched about five years ago by the Modi-government, have crossed the Rs 1 lakh crore mark. As per the latest finance ministry data, the total balance in over 36.06 crore Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) accounts was at Rs 1,00,495.94 crore as on July 3.

    The deposits in the account of the beneficiaries, which has been steadily rising, was Rs 99,649.84 crore on June 6 and Rs 99,232.71 crore in the week before.

    The PMJDY was launched on August 28, 2014, with an aim to provide universal access to banking facilities to the people in the country.

  • SBI slashes lending rates by 5 bps

    State Bank of India (SBI), the country’s largest lender, reduced its benchmark lending rate by 5 bps across all loan tenures. The lender’s one-year marginal cost of funds based lending rate (MCLR) will be 8.4% compared with 8.45% from Wednesday.

    “Interest rates on all loans linked to MCLR stand reduced by 5 bps with effect from 10th July 2019. This is the third rate cut in the current financial year. With today’s MCLR cut, the reduction in the home loan rates since April 10, 2019 is 20 bps,” SBI said.

    The move comes after RBI decided to cut its repo rate by 25 bps last month. RBI has reduced the repo rate by 75 bps in 2019.

  • Walmart Labs acqui-hires startups FloCare and BigTrade

    Walmart Labs, the technology arm of the US retail giant, has acqui-hired health tech start-up FloCare and B2B trading platform BigTrade for an undisclosed amount. Walmart has brought on-board the ??teams of the two Bengaluru-based companies to help strengthen its customer technology and supply chain.

  • Milkbasket acquires Bengaluru’s e-grocery store PSR Supply Chain

    Online grocery delivery platform Milkbasket said on Tuesday that it has bought Bengaluru-based e-grocery distributor PSR Supply Chain for an undisclosed amount.

    “The acquisition of PSR Supply Chain helps us in further strengthening our customer base and offerings in Bengaluru," said Anant Goel, co-founder and CEO of Milkbasket.

    The Delhi-based grocery start-up, which acquired Noida-based vegetables supplier Veggie India in March, has been on an acquisition spree, buying out local businesses that could help it gain a wider customer base. PSR Supply Chain, which caters to customers in east Bengaluru, has a network of over 4,000 registered customers and its last reported annual turnover was over Rs 2.5 crore.

  • Arun Kumar appointed as DGCA chief

    Arun Kumar, additional secretary in the Ministry of Civil Aviation, will now be holding the full-time charge of the head of aviation regulator DGCA, an official order said Tuesday.

    "The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Arun Kumar, Additional Secretary and Financial Advisor, Ministry of Civil Aviation as Director General in the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in the rank and pay of Additional Secretary," said the order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training.

    Kumar was heading the DGCA as an additional charge between May 31 and July 9 this year.

  • Dutee Chand wins gold in Summer University Games

    Ace Indian sprinter Dutee Chand has won the gold medal in women's 100-metre sprint at the 30th Summer University Games in Napoli, Italy becoming the first Indian to win do so. She clocked 11.32s in the final.

    The 23-year-old had qualified for the finals with a 11.41s finish in the semifinal heats and led the final race from start to finish on Tuesday.

    This is the first gold medal for India at this edition of the games. No Indian had qualified for the 100-metre final in the history of the University Games before this.

    Northeast Frontier Railway has won the‘Best Innovation Award’ for unique strategy adopted to keep wild elephants away from train tracks. The cash prize awarded of Rs 3 lakh. The NEFR, in a bid to tackle the problem, came up with ‘Plan Bee’ in 2017.

  • India Football Federation’s AIFF Awards announced

    Indian men's football team captain Sunil Chhetri and women's footballer Ashalata Devi bagged the top honours at the All India Football Federation's AIFF Awards on Tuesday.

    Chhetri was named the men’s footballer of the year, while the title in the women’s category was won by Devi.

    The Bengaluru FC and India skipper, who scored a brace in India's loss to Tajikistan in the opening match of the Intercontinental Cup, won the award for the third consecutive year.

    Chhetri, with 70 goals for India, is also the second-highest active international scorer — only behind Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo.

  • "News bulletin" launched in National Museum of Indian Cinema

    A fortnightly bulletin of the National Museum of Indian Cinema, brought out by the Films Division, was launched here Tuesday, with veteran film maker Jahnu Barua hoping that it will become a platform for movie buffs and other stakeholders.

    Barua described the newsletter "NMIC Bulletin" as a fantastic initiative by the Films Division. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had in January inaugurated the museum, whose portions occupy a 19th century heritage bungalow and a modern building in south Mumbai.

  • Former India goalkeeper Celestine passes away

    Former Indian football team goalkeeper A. U. Celestine, passed away here on Monday. He was 73, and is survived by his wife and son. Celestine played for the Tamil Nadu men’s team in the Senior Nationals as a goalkeeper in the 1965 and 1969 National championships and also represented India in the Merdeka Cup in Malaysia in 1969.

    He joined the Reserve Bank of India, Madras in 1967 and played for the team for several years. His contemporaries include Poyyathoppan, Orlando, Raju, Gunapandi, Thomas, Kosshy, Edwin Ross and Victor. Later, he was also the member in-charge for the Reserve Bank FC.

  • India-Myanmar: Exchange crucial information on drug trafficking

    India and Myanmar have resolved to exchange crucial information relating to drug trafficking and precursors. 

    The decision was taken at the 4th Director General level talks between Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control (CCDAC) in New Delhi today.

    An official statement said, the two-day bilateral meeting, which will conclude tomorrow, is being organized to take coordinated and concerted actions against drug trafficking between the two countries.
