Directions (next 10 questions) : Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions. Certain words/phrases are given in bold to help you locate them while answering some of the questions.
This was supposed to be the year when monetary policy started to get back to normal. Seven years after Lehman Brothers collapsed, central banks were expected to edge away from a policy of near-zero interest rates. But now, with 2015 almost over, the Federal Reserve has yet to push up rates while other rich-world central banks are focused more on easing than on tightening. Sweden’s Riksbank extended its quantitative easing (QE) programme last month. The President of the European Central Bank, too has indicated that further easing may come in December, probably by adjusting the pace, scale or type of asset purchases in its QE regime. More than two-fifths of economists forecast that the Bank of Japan would pick-up the pace of its monetary easing. Even if policy is kept unchanged, the bank plans to expand the money supply at an annual rate of ¥80 trillion ($664 billion). However, for emerging markets, on balance, slightly more emerging central banks have been tightening than cutting. But China cut interest rates in October, the sixth reduction in the last year. India unveiled a half-percentage point rate-cut in late September.
The attitude of central banks reflects their worries about economic growth. The IMF just lowered its global growth forecast to 3.1% for 2015, with cuts applying to both advanced and developing economies. Inflation is also low in Europe, North America and Asia, giving central banks more freedom to be supportive. The benign interest-rate outlook is one reason why equities have recovered from the wobbles they suffered in August and September. The other main reason why markets have rallied is a more sanguine view of the Chinese economy. Official figures for third-quarter GDP showed growth of 6.9% and, although some have doubts about the data, it was noticeable that the IMF did not downgrade its forecast for Chinese growth in its latest global outlook. But the optimism should not be taken too far. Other market indicators still suggest investors are worried about sluggish growth and deflation- the yield on the ten-year Treasury bond is hovering around 2%, not a level that suggests investors expect normal levels of economic growth to return any time soon.
American companies are also struggling to maintain the robust profit growth they have shown since 2009. While third-quarter profits for S&P 500 companies are marginally ahead of expectations (as is usually the case), they are still likely to be 4% lower than they were a year ago; sales will probably fall by 3%. It is simply hard to keep pushing up profits when global GDP growth is subdued. The number of American companies citing a slowing global economy as affecting their profits and revenues is more than 50% higher than a year ago, according to Thomson Reuters. The news is no better in Europe, where third-quarter profits are expected to be down 5.4 % on the year, with revenues dropping 7.9% . So the equity markets are caught in something of an awkward equilibrium. Positive economic news will make the outlook for profits more rosy but will also mean that the Fed is more likely to push up rates. And bad economic news may mean a respite from monetary tightening but is still bad news. This explains the rather bumpy ride that stockmarkets have had in 2015. The lack of profit growth makes it hard for markets to surge ahead. But without higher interest rates, or evidence that big economies are slipping into outright recession, share prices are unlikely to collapse. Central banks may have helped stockmarkets in an era of low growth by making other assets less attractive; the result was a positive shift in share valuations. But slow growth hasn’t gone away.

Area of a rectangle is 150 m2 . When the breadth of the same rectangle is increased by 2 m and the length decreased by 5 m, the area of the rectangle decreases by 30 m2. What is the perimeter of the square whose sides are equal to the length of the rectangle
Area of rectangle = 150
l×b= 150 ....(i)
According to question,
lb-(l-5)(b+2) = 30
lb-lb-2l+5b+10=30
5b-21=20 ....(ii)
By solving questions (i) and (ii) we get,
l = 15 m
b = 10 m
The side of square = l = 15 m
∴ Perimeter of square = 4 × 15
= 60 m
A, B and C started a business with investments of INR 4200/-, INR 3600/- and INR 2400/- respectively. After 4 months from the start of the business, A invested INR 1000/-more. After 6 months from the start of the business, B and C invested additional amounts in the respective ratio of 1:2. If at the end of 10 months they received a profit of INR 2820/- and A’s share in the profit was INR 1200/-, what was the additional amount that B invested
Let the additional amount invested by B and C
be x and 2x respectively.
Ratio of the investments of A, B, and C
=(4200×4+5200×6)
:[3600×6+(3600+x)×4]
:[2400×6+(2400+2x)×4]

:(14400+9600+8x)
=48000:36000+4x:24000+8x
Rational addition = 108000+12x
48000/108000+12x×2820=1200
108000+12x=2820×40
12x=112800-108000

x=INR 400/-
A vessel contains a mixture of milk and water in the respective ratio of 5 : 1 : 24 litre of mixture was taken out and replaced with the same quantity of milk so that the resultant ratio between the quantities of milk and water in the mixture was 13:2 respectively. If 15 litre of the mixture is again taken out from the vessel, what is the resultant quantity of milk in the mixture ? (in litre)
Let the total quantity of the mixture in vessel = 6x
In 24 litre of mixture,
Milk = 5/6×24 = 20 litre
Water = 24 -20 = 4 litre
5x-20+24/x-4=13/2
5x+4/x-4= 13/2
10x+8 = 13x-52
x=20 litre
Again in 15 litre of mixture,
Milk = 15×13/15 = 13 litre
Water = 15-13 = 2 litre
∴ Resultant quantity of milk in the mixture
= 5x-20+24-13
=5x-9=20×5-9
=91 litre

(ii) All the given batsman could bat in all the given matches played by them.
(iii) Few values are missing in the table (indicated by -), A candidate is expected to calculate the missing value, if it is required to answer the given question, on the basis of the given data and information.
The respective ratio between total number of balls faced by D and that by F in the tournament is 3: 4. Total number of runs scored by F in the tournament is what percent more than the total runs scored by d in the tournament
Let the total number of runs scored by D and F in the tournament be x and y respectively.
72 = x/Number of balls faced by D × 100
Number of balls faced by D = x × 100/72
Similarly,
66= y/Number of balls faced by F × 100
Number of balls faced by F = y × 100/66
x×100/72÷y×100/66 = 3/4
x×66/y×72= 3/4
x/y = 9/11
∴ Required percentage = 11-9/9×100 = 22 2/9%
If the runs scored by E in last 3 matches of the tournament are not considered, his average runs scored in the tournament will decrease by 9. If the runs scored by E in the 26th and 27th match are below 128 and no two scores among these 3 scores are equal, what are the minimum possible runs scored by E in the 28th match
Total runs scored by E in 28 matches
= 28×55 = 1540
If last three matches are not considered then total runs scored by E in 25 matches
= 25 ×(55-9) = 25×46=1150
∴ Total runs scored in last 3 matches
=1540-1150=390
Minimum possible runs scored by E in 28th match can be possible if E scoreds maximum runs in 26th and 27th matches
Runs scored by E in 26th and 27th matches
= 126 and 127
∴ Minimum possible runs scored by E in the 28th match = 390-(126+127)
=390-253=137
In the tournament, the total number of balls faced by batsman A is 74 less than the total number of runs scored by him. What is the average run scored by batsman A in the tournament
Let the total runs scored by batsman A = x
Strike rate = 129.6
x/x-74×100=129.6
1000x= 1296 x - 95904
296x = 95904 ⇒ x = 324
∴ Required average run = 324/8 = 40.5
Batsman B faced equal number of balls in first 10 matches he played in the tournament and last 10 matches he played in the tournament. If his strike rate in first 10 matches and last 10 matches of the tournament are 120 and 150 respectively, what is the total number of balls faced by him in the tournament
Let the number of balls faced by him in first 10 matches = x
Total runs scored in first 10 matches = 120x/100
Total runs scored in last 10 matches = 150x/100
120x/100+150x/100=20×81
270x=162000
x=600
∴ Total number of balls faced by him in the tournament = 600+600 = 1200
What is the number of matches played by batsman C in the tournament
Number of matches played by batsman C in the tournament = 114×400/38×100=12
10 men can complete a project in 12 days, 12 children can complete the same project in 16 days and 8 women can complete the same project in 20 days. 5 men and 12 children started working on the project. If after 4 days, 8 children were replaced by 4 women. In how many days the remaining project was completed
1 man will complete the work
=10×12=120 days
1 woman will complete the work
=8×20=160 days
1 child will complete the work
=12×16=192 days
4 day's work of 5 men + 12 children
=4[5/120+12/192]
=4[1/24+1/16]
=4×5/48=5/12
∴Remaining work = 1-5/12=7/12
∴ 5 men + 4 women + 4 children will complete the remaining work = 7/12÷[5/120+4/160+4/192]
=7/12÷[1/24+1/40+1/48]
=7/12÷10+6+5/240=7/12×240/21
= 20/3= 6 2/3 days
In a village, 60% registered voters cast their votes in the election. Only two candidates (A and B) were contesting the election. A won the election by 600 votes. Had B received 40% more votes, the result would have been a tie. How many registered voters are there in the village
Let the total number of registered voters = x
Registered voter who cast vote = 3x/5
Let condidate B gets y votes

y+y+600=3x/5
2y+600=3x/5 ....(i)
y×140/100=3x/5-y×140/100
14y/5=3x/5
⇒ y=3x/14 .....(ii)
On putting the value of y in eqn.(i)
2×3x/14+600=3x/5
x=3500
Eight years ago, Poorvi’s age was equal to the sum of the present ages of her one son and one daughter. Five years hence, the respective ratio between the ages of her daughter and her son that time will be 7:6. If Poorvi’s husband is 7 years elder to her and his present age is three times the present age of their son, what is the present age of the daughter ? (in years)
Let the age of her daughter after five years = 7x
Age of her son after five years = 6x
Age of Poorvi before eight years
=(7x-5+6x-5)
=13x-10
Present age of Poorvi = 13x-10+8
=13x-2
Present age of her husband = 3 (6x-5)
=18x-15
18x-15-13x+2=7
5x=20
x=4
∴ Present age of Poorvi's daughter = 7x-5
=7×4-5
=23 years
Boat A travels downstream from Point X to Point Y in 3 hours less than the time taken by Boat B to travel upstream from Point Y to Point Z. The distance between X and Y is 20 km, which is half of the distance between Y and Z. The speed of Boat B in still water is equal to the speed of Boat B upstream. What is the speed of Boat. A in still water
(Consider the speed of the current to be the same.)
Let the speed of current = x km/h
Speed of Boat B upstream=(10-x) km/h
speed of Boat A downstream = (10-x+x) km/h

40/10-x-20/10=3
40/10-x=5
50-5x=40
5x=10
x=2 km/h
∴ Speed of Boat A in still water = (10-x)
=10-2
=8 km/h

Distribution of total number of male members in 5 health clubs in 2011 total number = 3600
Only 25% of the members (both male and female in health club D have lifetime membership. If the number of females in health club D who have lifetime membership is 126. What percent of male members in health club D have lifetime membership
total number of members in health club D have lifetime membership = 6300×20/100×25/100=315
Number of females in health club D who have lifetime membership = 126
Number of male members in helath club D
= 3600×20/100=720
∴ Percentage of male members in health club D who have lifetime membership
= 315-126/720×100=26 1/4%
What is the average number of female members in health clubs A, B and C
Number of members (both male and female) in health
club a = 6300×20/100×25/100=315
Number of male members is health club A
= 3600×24/100=864
Number of female members in health club A
=1323-864 = 459
Number of members (both male and female) in health club B = 6300×33/100=2079
Number of male members in health club B

∴ Required average = 459+999+234/3
= 1692/3 = 564
Number of male members in health clubs A and C increased by equal number from 2011 to 2012. If the respective ratio between number of male numbers in health club A and that in C in 2012 is 13 : 10, what is the number of male members in health club C in 2012
Number of male members in health club A
in 2011 = 3600×24/100=864
in 2011 = 3600×18/100 = 648
Let the total number of increased members in health
club A and C in 2012 = x
864+x/648+x= 13/10
8640+10x=13x+8424
x=72
∴ Number of male members in health club C
in 2012 = 648+72 = 720
What is the central angle corresponding to number of (both male and female) in health club B
Required central angle = 33/100×360= 118.80

Rohan travelling at a speed of ‘X’ km/h took 2 hours 30 min to cover 2/3rd of the distance. Travelling at a speed of ‘X+2’ km/h, he took 50 min to cover the remaining 1/3rd of the same distance. What was the total distance
Let total distance = 3 y km
Speed×Time = Distance
x×5/2 = 3y×2/3
x×5/2=2y
5x=4y .....(i)
Again,
(x+2)×50/60=y
(x+2)×5=6y ......(ii)
On dividing equation (ii) by equation (i), we get
(x+2)×5/5x= 6y/4y
x+2/x=3/2
3x= 2x+4
From equation (i),
5×4 = 4y
⇒ y=5
∴ Total distance = 3y = 3×5
= 15 km
Ram bought two articles- A and B at a total cost of INR 8000/- He sold article A at 20% profit and article B at 12% loss. In the whole deal he made no gain and no loss. At what price should Ram have sold article B to make an overall profit of 25%
Let the cost price of article B = INR x
∴Cost price of article A = INR (8000-x)
(8000-x)×120/100+x×88/100=8000
960000-120x+88x=800000
32x = 160000
x=INR 5000/-
For 25% profit,
Selling price of article B = 5000×125/100
=INR 6250/-
An equal sum is invested for six years in scheme A offering simple interest at X% p.a. and in Scheme B for two years offering compound interest at 10% p.a. (compounded annually). The interest earned from Scheme A is double the interest earned from Scheme B. Had the rate of interest been X+2% simple interest p.a. in scheme A, the difference in the interests earned from both the schemes would have been INR 3960/-, what was the sum invested in each of the scheme
Let the sum invested in each of the scheme = p
p×6×x/100 = 2p [(1+10/100)2-1]
3X/100=21/100
X = 7%
Now, new rate = X +2
= 7+2
=9%
Again, according to question,
P×9×6/100-P[(1+10/100)2-1]=3960
54p/100-21/100P = 3960
33p = 396000
P = INR 12000/-
