Baker College for Women, Kottayam (Kerala, India) is an institution of higher education, offering various programmes designed in association with Mahatma Gandhi University. Affiliated to M.G.University and managed by the Church of South India’s Diocese of Madhya Kerala, the institution is a milestone of the Bicentenary Celebrations of the Diocese.
The Baker institutions of the Diocese are emblems of the concern and effort of the Diocese towards the empowerment of women through education, a mandate handed down by its pioneering missionaries of the Church Missionary Society, London. Female education in Kerala was launched by Mrs. Amelia Dorothea Baker, wife of Rev. Henry Baker (Sr), one of the early CMS Missionaries to the land. In 1820 was this first step by Mrs. Baker, to start teaching the ‘Three R-s’ to a small group of six girls at her residence. This developed into the Baker School which was later shifted – in 1865 – to its present site at a spot now called ‘Baker Hill’, in the heart of Kottayam town. In 1900 this was upgraded into a High School. Currently, this is a Higher Secondary School.
The Baker College for Women is a leap ahead, to offer education for women, with an assurance to maintain the spirit, tradition and quality of the Baker Institutions and to create a new vibrancy in the arena of higher education. The College will offer her students a transformative educational experience by clinching on to the pioneering and inventive skills and drills to empower an assorted society.
