Government First Grade College, Sidlaghatta is affiliated to the Bangalore University; Bangalore was founded in 1991 by the sincere efforts of elite citizens of the taluk and Sri.V.Muniyappa, then the Sidlaghatta constituency MLA to provide quality higher education to the ever long drought affected and downtrodden rural youth. Sidlaghatta is the head quarters of sidlaghatta Taluk, of Chikkaballapur District, is barely 60 kms. from Bangalore, its contribution to folklore is immense and also fertile breeding ground for cocoons from which silk is extracted. It produces the finest quality of silk in India and is having the country’s biggest cocoon market. Sidlaghatta is inhabited by the people of different communities, especially by socially weaker sections of SC/ST, minority and Other Backward Communities. The taluk consists of Sidlaghatta Municipal town and 300 Revenue villages with a population of 2,14,169 as per 2011 census. By the collective demand of the people of the region and sincere efforts of then the Constituency MLA, the government of Karnataka sanctioned a first grade college to this area with Arts and Commerce faculties through its order No: ED/74/YOYOKA/01, Bangalore dated 25th July 1991, perhaps, there were no such institutions in this region at that time. As one of the Karnataka’s pioneer Government Colleges in general education, Government First Grade College, Sidlaghatta is committed to empowering rural youth to think independently, to understand the complexities and challenges of today’s life and transform them in to opportunities, to set benchmarks for others and finally to epitomize the change they seek to bring in the nation as well as the world and like torchbearers, lead it towards a brighter future. Upholding the noble traditions lay down by the founders, the institution surges ahead towards excellence.
The College which was started with only 136 students mostly from economically and socially backward classes, at present it is offering four UG courses namely, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Business Management and Bachelor of Science, all are three year undergraduate courses , is continuously imparting knowledge with a total of 22,000 books at the library, encouraging of students participating at university and state level sports competition, community services through NSS and participation in Nation’s such as pulse polio immunization programme, Aids awareness programme and advancing to higher studies. The commendable achievement of our college is the fruitful production of successful graduates from all the courses Arts, Commerce, Management and Science and among them some have been holding very plum posts – which are indeed a feather in our cap, the contribution of our college.
