Nirmala Sadan is an institute dedicated for the Education and Rehabilitation of persons with mental retardation and it is run by Franciscan Clarist sisters in the Diocese of Kothamangalam. The Institute has a humble beginning with 8 children in a rent free building in the year 1985. Later it was shifted to the present site which was donated by the Bishop of the Diocese of Kothamangalam. The institute which is located in Muvattupuzha – Thodupuzha route is 3km from muvattupuzha town. It is in Avoly Grama Panchayath of Muvattupuzha Taluk in the District of Ernakulam. The various units of Nirmala Sadan are registered under Vimala Mahila Samajam, the charitable society (reg. No ER 175/76).

Every person with mental retardation is a creation of God just like any other human being. They may leave with dignity, enjoy rights and become self-reliant.
Mission
Empower persons with mental retardation and their families through professional services; develop human resources to take care of the needs of these individuals from early Intervention to Vocational Rehabilitation.
Objectives
- To provide special education services for persons with Mental Retardation with the help of multidisciplinary team.
- To prepare human resources in the field of mental retardation to serve children from infancy to adulthood.
- To prepare human resources in the field of Learning Disability to serve children with learning disability.
- To conduct and promote research in the field of mental retardation.
- To provide early detection and Intervention services to children with developmental delay.
- To rejuvenate persons with disabilities through community based rehabilitation.
- To provide guidelines, consultancy services and awareness programs to parents , family members and community
- To facilitate various kinds of quality services for persons with Mental Retardation.
