By the mid-nineteenth century, the educated Indian had become sufficiently aware of both his rich historical heritage and the subject state of his current existence. Nostalgia and a sense of racial identity grew as Indians gradually perceived the oppressiveness of alien rule. In the early nineteenth century, Orientalist scholars associated with the Fort William College, Kolkata helped considerably to unearth several obscure Indian texts and traditions, thereby, also creating a new awareness and sensitivity among Indians about their cultural heritage.
In the first half of the nineteenth century, particularly in some parts of the country, patriotism was not grossly inconsistent with an undisguised support for the continuation of British rule. Writers of this period from many centuries of ‘tyrannical’ and ‘unprogressive’ governance of earlier rulers. Many people of this time, in fact, made an important distinction between the pragmatic gains to be made from a short-term tutelage under British rule and a long-term objective of securing independence from it. Through such thoughts ultimately proved to be naïve and over-optimistic, in the 1820s and 1830s the advantages of British rule seemed to outweigh its disadvantages. In a letter written in reformer Raja Rammohan Roy (1774-1833) opposed an official move to open a Sanskrit College on the ground that it would produce no positive or progressive influence on the educated Hindu. He felt rather than indulge in abstract metaphysical speculation as was likely to be the result of a purely Sanskritic education, Indians would profit far more by imbibing the best of modern European civilization—pragmatism and a rational, scientific outlook. Social usefulness more than anything else, was now to be the true measure of things. In fact, his emphasis on rationality and a commonsense approach to religion led some of his friends and admirers to call him a ‘religious utilitarian’.

In how many different ways can the letters of the word ‘CANDIDATE’ be arranged in such a way that the vowels always come together
There are 9 letters in the given word out of which 4 are vowels.
In the word 'CANDIDATE' we treat the vowels 'AIAE'as one letter.
Thus, we have 'CNDDT (AIAE)'
Now, we have to arrange 6 letters, out of which D occurs twice.
Therefore, number of ways arranging these letters = 61/21
= 6×5×4×3×2×1/2×1=720/2=360 ways
Now, AIAE has 4 letters in which A occurs 2 times. Number of ways of arranging these letters
=41/21=4×3×2×1/2×1=12
Therefore, required number of wyas
= 360×12=4320

An item was bought at INR X and sold at INR Y, thereby earning a profit of 20%. Had the value of X been 15% less and the value of Y been INR 76 less, a profit of 30% would have been earned. What was the value of ‘X’
C.P = X, Profit = 20%, S.P.= Y
∴ 120/100x= Y or Y = 6/5 X
New, C.P = 85/100 X = 17/20X
Profit = 30%
S.P = Y=76
∴130/100×17/20X=Y-76
or Y = 221/200X+76
On comparing equations (i) and (ii),
221/200X+76=6/5X
76=6/5X-221/200X
76=240X-221X/200
76×200/19=X
800=X

What is the value of ‘X’ (mentioned in the passage)
Here, X = Total number of students in the college
Total number of male students
=72+99+54+135+45+27+18=450
Total number of female students
= 49+70+28+91+63+35+14=350
X=450+350

A shopkeeper brought a table marked at INR 200/- at successive discount of 10% and 15% respectively. He spent INR 7/- on transport and sold the table for INR 208/-, What will be his profit percentage
Cost price of table = 200×90/100×85/100+7
=153+7
=INR 160/-
∴ Required profit percentage = 208-160/160×100

Pipe A and B can fill a tank in 10 hours and 8 hours respectively. After certain time, pipe A was closed. It took a total of 6 hours to fill the tank completely. For how many hours did pipe A work
Suppose, A did the work in x hours.
x/10+6/8=1

Kajal spends 55% of her monthly income on grocery, clothes and education in the ratio of 4:2:5 respectively. If the amount spent on clothes is INR 5540/-, what is Kajal’s monthly income
Let Kajal's monthly income be INR x and the common ratio be y.
∴ Amount spent on grocery, clothes and education
= 4y+2y+5y
11y=55x/100 ....(i)
and 2y=5540 ⇒ y = 2770
By putting the value of y in equation (i), we get,
11×2770=55x/100x=11×2770×100/55
x= INR 55400/-

A committee of five members is to be formed out of 3 trainees, 4 professors and 6 research associates. In how many different ways this can be done if the committee should have all the 4 professors and 1 research associate or all 3 trainees and 2 professors
Five members team with 4 professors and 1 research associate can be selected in
= 4C4×6C1=1×6=6 ways
Five members team with 3 trainees and 2 professors
can be selected in = 3C3×4C2=1×6
=6 ways
∴ Total number of required ways = 6+6=12
A 20 litre mixture contains milk and water in the respective ratio of 3:2. If 10 litre of the mixture is removed and replaced with pure milk and the operation is repeated once more. At the end of the two removals and replacement, what is the ratio of milk and water in the resultant mixture respectively
Amount of water in the mixture
= 20×2/5=8 litre
Amount of milk in the mixture = 20-8 = 12 litre
We know that,
Wr/W0=[1-R/M]n
Here Wr= Amount of water in the mixture after the replacements have taken place.
W0= Amount of water in the mixture
Wr/W0=[1-10/20]2=[1-I/2]2
Wr/W0=[1/2]2=1/4
Wr=8/4=2 litre
Hence, the mixture will have 18 litre of milk and 2 litre of water.
∴ Required ratio = 18:2 = 9:1
A trader marks up his goods by 50%. However, he could sell only one-third of his stock at this price. The half of the remaining stock was sold at a discount of 7.14% and the remaining at a discount of 16.67%. Find the overall percentage profit of the trader.
Let the cost price of the stock = INR 100/-
Market price = 100×150/100= INR 150/-
Selling price = 150/3[100-50/100]+2/3×150/2
×[100-7.14/100]+50×[100-16.67/100]
=50+46.43+41.66= INR 138.09
∴ Required profit percentage
=138.09-100/100×100
=38.09%=38%
