The Government Arts College, (GAC) Ariyalur , a pioneering Government College, was established in the year 1965, the awareness of Higher Education among the people in and around the small town Ariyalur and the development in the field of primary, middle level education in Tamilnadu as well as the then State Government policy to spread Higher Education in the rural areas of less privileged, contributed to establish this revolutionary Government College of Arts at Ariyalur. The College was initiated on the 14th of June 1965 by the veteran professor Y.P. Ramachandran, Officially it was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Tamilnadu, Mr. M. Bhakthawathchalam on 23.08.1965. Beginning from the first and foremost Principal and through many intellectual Principals to the prominent present Principal Dr. M.M. Senthamilselvi, it has been governing with utmost care and earnestness for the uplift of the less privileged in the rural backdrop.. At GAC the good work commenced with Intermediate courses which were soon followed by degree courses in 1969. With the firm and steady growth, now GAC is affiliated to Bharathidasan University, Thiruchirappalli and offers valuable 11 Under Graduate Courses and 11 Post Graduate Courses in addition 3 M.Phil, and 8 PhD, Research Courses. The GAC has been functioning for the welfare of Scheduled Caste/Tribe, Backward Caste and other people in and around Ariyalur. It has an amazing rise and enhanced into a leading institution of Higher Education. It is committed to empower and enrich the students to think and act autonomously as well as to realize the threats and challenges in the present scenario furthermore renovate them into opportunities to set point of references for others. GAC is upholding the traditional values and coping with the Curriculum it leads the leaders of tomorrow to achieve success in all their future endeavours. .
