St. John’s College is one of the Malankara Syrian Catholic Colleges established and administered by the Major Archdiocese of Thiruvananthapuram in accordance with the rights of the minority community guaranteed in the constitution of our country. This esteemed centre of learning is the fruit of the vision and far sightedness of late Archbishop Most Rev.Benedict Mar Gregorios and currently flourishing under the patronage of His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos. Ever since its inception, the College is championing the cause of learning and total development of the region.
St. John’s, affiliated to the University of Kerala was started in 1964 with Pre-Degree course and upgraded successively with B.A., B.Sc. and B.Com. Degree courses in 1967, M.Sc. Mathematics in 1995, B.A. Communicative English (Semester) in 1998, M.A. Public Administration (Semester) in 1999 and M.Sc. Environmental Sciences (Semester) in 2001, M.Sc. Chemistry in 2013 and B.A. Economics in 2014.
While being conscious of its special obligations for providing educational opportunities to the Malankara Syrian Catholic Community, the management of the college extends its service to the members of other communities as well to the extent possible. In 2005, the College was accredited with B+ grade by NAAC after assessment by its peer team which visited the college in 2005.
St. John’s College has an incomparable identity. It is a lighted lamp set on the mountain to illumine generations with insights, to eradicate the darkness of ignorance, poverty and evils; and to pave the way to equip the individuals and the society of a remote mountainous area, with the standards of modern life. It is the fulfillment of one of the towering aspirations of the Malankara Major Archi Episcopal Catholic Church. The educational development of the region justifies her existence. Educational service as a process for transformation and integral growth is inspired by a vision of human kind and the rest of the creation and its destiny drawn from the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.
We, the St. John’s members commit ourselves for the promotion of Justice, social development, value formation, preservation of the integrity of creation, private and public life, national integration, tolerance and respect for all religions, responsible use of cybernetics and mass media, fostering the wholesome and simple life-style, combating the ill effects of corruption, violence, drug abuse, criminalization and powerlessness of the marginalities, particularly of the women.
This college stands for academic excellence, development of skills and character formation based on the love of God and service of man as modelled in Jesus Christ, with a view to producing “intellectually mature, morally upright, socially committed and spiritually inspired” men and women of India.
