The speed of a boat in still water is 14 km/h and the speed of the current is 2 km/h. The time taken by the boat to travel from point A to point B downstream is 1 hour less than the time taken to the same boat to travel from point B to point C upstream. If the distance between points A and B is 4 km less than that between points B and C, what is the distance between points B and C

  • 42 km
  • 36 km
  • 45 km
  • 40 km
  • 30 km
  • Explanation:

    Let the distance between points A and B = x km

    ∴ Distance between Points B and C = (x+4)km

    Downstream speed of the boat = 14 +2 = 16 km/h

    Upstream speed of the boat = 14-2 = 12 km/h

    According to question,

    x+4/12-x/16=1

    4x+16-3x=48

    x=32 km

    ∴ Distance between points B and C

    = x+4 = 32+4

    =36 km
