Formation of National Commission for STs

(i) 65th constitutional amendment act of 1990-The National commission for SC's and ST'scame into existence

(ii)89th Constitutional Amendment act of 2003-National Commission for STs was born by bifurcating the existing National Commission for STs and SCs.It also inserted the article 338 A into the constitution.

Function of the commission

The National Commission for STs must monitor all the matters concerning to constitutional and other legal safeguards for the STs and to evaluate their working conditions.They also have to advise them on the socio-economic development and must evaluate their progress.

Report and Powers of the Commission

1)The commission presents an annual report to the President.

2)The President submits all such reports before the Parliament.

3)The commission has all the powers of a civil court

4)The central government and state government are required to consult the commission on all major policy matters affecting the STs.
