Gemology Career

A gemologist is a person who has wide knowledge about gem stones and its characteristics. A gemologist can identify the quality and richness of a stone and can decide its price in the market. They can evaluate details that are not visible to the human eye. Only a gemologist can identify the best gems in the world that’s why their profession are in great demand. Some of the world renowned gems are Diamond, Ruby, Sapphire,Jasper etc. They have their own gauges and testers to identify the quality of a stone. A gemologist is the person who certifies gems. A gemologist mostly works with jewelries apparel shops etc.

Gemstones are valued for their refractive index, specific gravity and crystal structure. The hardness of any stone is determined by the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. A gemologist will revive the stone from its original state and will give necessary care and polish and will make it available for sale. A gemologist usually has to be in the field where gems are extracted. They will have tools to test the gems in the field itself.

Gemology Eligibility

To become a gemologist one must have studies 12th std from a recognized university with a minimum of 50% marks.

Step 1 To be a gemologist one must enroll for courses in gemology given by the reputed institutes in India. Some of the reputed colleges in India are :-

4) EGL, Maharashtra

5) Indian Institute of Gemology ,Delhi

These institutes will provide diploma and short term courses in gemology .The courses are mostly for four to five months

There are many alternative careers a gemologist can do. The first and the most obvious profession is being a lab gemologist. A lab gemologist can work in a laboratory. Gemologist also can work as a gem stone cutter or a designer where there is a much need in jewelries. You can also be a gem stone buyer where you can buy the best ones and sell it to the needful.
