Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami appointed Indian cricketer Rishabh Pant as the state brand ambassador on December 19, 2021. The wicketkeeper-batsman has been appointed to the post to encourage the youth of the state towards sports and public health."

Kidambi Srikanth became the first Indian male shuttler to win silver at the BWF World Championships on December 19, 2021. He settled for the silver after losing to Singapore's Loh Kean Yew in straight sets of 21-15, 22-20.

Max Verstappen was crowned Formula One world champion after a dramatic season-ending at Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on December 12, 2021. Verstappen overtook Lewis Hamilton who was heading for his 8th title, to win his first-ever Formula One title. He has become the first Dutch world champion. Hamilton's Mercedes team protested against Verstappen's win.

Virat Kohli is the captain of India's test cricket team. He had decided to relinquish his captaincy in the 20-overs format earlier and was recently replaced as India's ODI skipper with Rohit Sharma taking up his position.

China's Beijing city will host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games from February 4-20, 2022. The city was selected as the host city after beating Almaty by four votes on July 31, 2015 at the 128th IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur.

Rohit Sharma has been named as the new captain of the Indian ODI and T20I teams. The All-India Senior Selection Committee announced the same on December 8, 2021. He will be succeeding Virat Kohli, who had announced his decision to step down as the T20 captain in September 2021.

After US, Australia has announced a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics over concerns about human rights abuses in Xinjiang, particularly against the Uyghur minority community. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said that the decision should come as "no surprise" that their diplomats and politicians would boycott the event.

Pat Cummins has been appointed as Australia's 47th Test captain and former skipper Steve Smith has been appointed as the Vice-captain of the test team. Steve Smith has made comeback to a leadership role almost 3 years after he had to step down as captain of the Australian team following the ball-tampering row in South Africa in 2018. Smith had been banned from any leadership roles for two years post the incident.

Two new Ballon d’Or awards were introduced this year- 'The Striker of the Year' & 'The Club of the Year'.  While the striker of the year award went to Robert Lewandowski, the Best Club of the Year award went to Chelsea.

Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin became India's third-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket during the first test between India and New Zealand at Kanpur on November 29, 2021. He surpassed Harbhajan Singh's tally of 417 wickets.

Lionel Messi had won the 2019 Ballon d’Or award, which is one of the oldest and most prestigious individual awards in football that is presented annually by the French news magazine France Football. Lionel Messi has won the Ballon d’Or award a record six times while he was playing for Barcelona.

Rohit Sharma has been named as the new captain of the Indian T20I side, while KL Rahul has been named as Vice-Captain for India's T20 series against New Zealand. Rohit Sharma succeeds Virat Kohli, who stepped down as the skipper in the shortest format of the game after India bowed out of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021.

The International Cricket Council informed on November 5, 2021 that West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo has confirmed that he will retire at the end of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Bravo said that he will retire from international cricket after the ongoing T20 World Cup as "time has come" to leave the stage after a career he can be proud of.

Akash Kumar has become the seventh Indian male boxer who won a medal at the World Boxing Championships. He won a bronze medal in the 54-kg category at the 2021 AIBA Men’s World Boxing Championships in Belgrade, Serbia on November 4, 2021.
