The International Jazz Day 2016 was observed across the world on 30 April 2016. This year, UNESCO celebrated the day at Washington, DC.The Day is intended to raise awareness in the international community of the virtues of jazz as an educational tool, and a force for peace, unity, dialogue and enhanced cooperation among people.

Tabassum Adnan, a women’s rights activist from Swat valley of Pakistan, on 28 April 2016 won the prestigious Mandela - Graça Machel Innovation Award 2016 in Bogota, Colombia.She won the award for the individual activist category on the concluding day of the International Civil Society Week held from 25 April to 28 April 2016.

Endangered asiatic wild dogs were in news in the last week of April 2016 as the nature reserve in northwest China's Gansu Province has declared it had spotted Nine dholes, or Asiatic wild dogs. These animals are rarely seen in the inland province.

Indian Navy on 28 April 2016 decommissioned Indian Naval Ships (INS) Veer and Nipat at a ceremony in the Naval Dockyard, Mumbai. They both are of VEER class corvettes.

Union Minister for State (IC) for Power, Coal and Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal on 30 April 2016 launched National LED programme -Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) in Madhya Pradesh.  He launched the programme along with the state CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan at a function in Bhopal.

The scheme is being implemented by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture of PSUs under the Union Ministry of Power.

Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah inaugurated the underground corridor of Bangalore Metro Rail on 30 April 2016. Bangalore Metro Rail is also known as Namma Metro.

The International Bank Note Society (IBNS) on 25 April 2016 announced that New Zealand’s five-dollar note won the Banknote of the Year Award for 2015. The bill came out as a clear winner among nearly 40 eligible designs from a record 20 countries.
The runner’s up in the voting were Sweden’s 20 Kronor note depicting children's author Astrid Lindgren, Russia’s 100 Ruble note illustrating Crimean landmarks, Kazakhstan’s 20000 Tenge note and Scotland’s (Clydesdale Bank) 5 Pound polymer note.

South Korea on 27 April 2016 announced that its Olympic athletes will wear uniforms that have been infused with insect repellent to keep mosquitoes carrying the Zika virus at bay.The South Korean team's uniforms were unveiled in Seoul, marking 100 days until the opening ceremony in Brazil.These formal long-sleeved shirts and trousers containing mosquito repellent will be worn by the South Korean athletes during ceremonies and at the athletes' village at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.The uniforms are meant to ward off mosquito-borne transmission of the Zika virus.

Indian academician Radha Kumar was on 28 April 2016 appointed to the United Nations' University Council to formulate its principles and policies, consider and approve biennial budget and work programme.

Experian, the global information services company, in the last week of April 2016 launched a fraud detection mechanism named the Hunter Fraud Score.The new scoring mechanism measures the probability of fraud in a credit application across banking and insurance industries.Experian had launched the Hunter Fraud Management Services for the life insurance sector in India in March 2016.

Union government on 27 April 2016 issued a notification banning the import of dogs for commercial breeding. The imports are allowed only for research or defence purposes.The ban came after many animal rights organisations raised concerns over foreign breed dogs suffering due to unsuitable climatic conditions

Senior IPS officer Surender Kumar Bhagat was on 28 April 2016 appointed as the Director General (DG) of Railways Protection Force (RPF). His appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).

Rajya Sabha on 28 April 2016 passed the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2016 to include certain communities in the list of Scheduled Castes (SC) from 4 states.

The bill seeks to amend Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950 to include certain communities from Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Kerala and West Bengal in the list. It also carries provisions for exclusion of certain communities from Odisha and removal of area restriction in respect of certain communities.

The Day of Remembrance for all Victims of Chemical Warfare 2016 was observed on 29 April 2016 by the United Nations (UN).This commemoration will provide an opportunity to pay tribute to the victims of chemical warfare, as well as to reaffirm the commitment of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to the elimination of the threat of chemical weapons.

New Zealand ace batsman Kane Williamson on 28 April 2016 was confirmed as 29th test cricket captain of New Zealand cricket Team.He will succeed Brendon McCullum as captain in all three formats. McCullum retired from test cricket in February 2016.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on 28 April 2016 inaugurated 100 piped water supply projects for rural areas. The CM also pledged to make piped water provision in all gram panchayats by 2017.The project was inaugurated on the occasion of Utkal Gaurab Madhusudan Das’ anniversary.  Das was the first graduate and advocate of Odisha.

The Rajya Sabha on 28 April 2016 passed the Industries (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2015. The bill seeks to amend the Industries (Development and Regulation) Act, 1951.

With this, both the houses of parliament passed the bill. Lok Sabha passed the bill on 10 December 2015 after it was introduced by Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Nirmala Sitharaman.It proposes to bring industries engaged in the manufacture of potable alcohol under the exclusive control of States in all respects.

China developed a new electronic paper, which has been heralded as "the world's first graphene electronic paper. It was in news in the last of April 2016.It will be a huge breakthrough that will catapult the material to a new level. It was developed  by The Guangzhou OED Technologies in partnership with a company in Chongqing.

Gujarat government on 28 April 2016 announced 10 percent reservation for economically backward classes (EBCs) in general category.

Tobago batsman Iraq Thomas on 24 April 2016 created a record by scoring 21-ball century in the Tobago Cricket Association’s T20 tournament at Louis D'or.The 23-year-old Thomas represented Scraborough/Mason Hall and remained not out on 131 runs off just 31 balls.

Supreme Court on 25 April 2016 appointed senior advocate Gopal Subramanium as ‘amicus curiae’ and requested his assistance to explore how the recommendations of the Justice RM Lodha committee could be implemented. 

The 2016 World Day for Safety and Health at Work was observed across the world on 28 April 2016 with the theme Workplace Stress: a collective challenge.

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) celebrates World Day for Safety and Health to raise awareness of safety in the workplace. Occurring annually since 2003, each year it focuses on a specific area and bases a campaign around the theme.

Kerala cartoonist V T Thomas, popularly known as Toms, passed away on 27 April 2016 following a brief illness at in Kottayam, Kerela.  He is survived by his wife Thresyakutty and children Boban, Molly, Rani, Peter, Bose, Princy.Toms created the legendary cartoon characters Boban and Molly (Bobanum Moliyum).

Lobsang Sangay was re-elected as the Prime Minister of the Tibetan government-in-exile on 27 April 2016 for the second consecutive time.48-year-old Sangay who has been the Prime Minister since 2011 defeated his only rival - Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament Pempa Tsering by 9012 votes.

China on 27 April 2016 successfully launched the Kunpeng-1B sounding rocket from a launch pad in Danzhou City in the southern Chinese Hainan Province. The rocket reached a maximum height of 316 kilometres (196 miles), with the total flight time coming to 10 minutes.
