  • Alexei Leonov, the first human to walk in space passes away

    Alexei Leonov, the legendary Soviet cosmonaut who became the first human to walk in space 54 years ago, has died in Moscow at 85.

    The Russian space agency Roscosmos announced the news on its website on Friday, but gave no cause of death. Leonov had health issues for several years, according to Russia media.

  • First female head of Nobel’s Literature Award Body, Sara Danius passes away

    Sara Danius, the first female head of the prestigious Swedish body that awards the Nobel Prize in Literature, has died. She was 57.

    Her family told Swedish news agency TT that Danius passed away early Saturday following a long illness. Swedish media said she had breast cancer.

    Danius, who was a literature critic, professor and writer, served as the first female permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy between 2015 and 2018.

    She published a book last year on singer-songwriter Bob Dylan having played a central role in the decision to award the 2016 literature award to the US musician.

    Danius left the Swedish Academy, established in 1786, in February in the wake of a sex abuse and financial crime scandal that broke out in 2017. She wasn't accused of wrongdoing.

  • Legendary saxophonist Kadri Gopalnath passes away

    Kadri Gopalnath, the famous saxophone player passed away in a hospital on Friday morning in Mangaluru, Karnataka. He was 69.

    He is survived by his wife and his sons. Manikanth Kadri, the famous music composer and singer is his son. According to sources, Gopalnath had been ill for three months and was admitted to the hospital on Thursday night.

    The maestro of Carnatic music was born in Sajeepa Mooda village in the Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada in the year 1949. His first music teacher was his father.

  • Former India goalkeeper Celestine passes away

    Former Indian football team goalkeeper A. U. Celestine, passed away here on Monday. He was 73, and is survived by his wife and son. Celestine played for the Tamil Nadu men’s team in the Senior Nationals as a goalkeeper in the 1965 and 1969 National championships and also represented India in the Merdeka Cup in Malaysia in 1969.

    He joined the Reserve Bank of India, Madras in 1967 and played for the team for several years. His contemporaries include Poyyathoppan, Orlando, Raju, Gunapandi, Thomas, Kosshy, Edwin Ross and Victor. Later, he was also the member in-charge for the Reserve Bank FC.

  • US auto industry legend Lee Iacocca passes away

    Automobile industry legend Lee Iacocca, who is credited with creating the iconic Ford Mustang and saving Chrysler from bankruptcy, died Tuesday at the age of 94.

    Iacocca died at his home in Bel-Air, a neighborhood of Los Angeles, from complications of Parkinson's disease.

    Birla Group patriarch and a doyen of the Indian industry Basant Kumar Birla passed away in Mumbai on Wednesday at the age of 98.

    His family said Birla had been suffering from age-related ailments.

    Birla was the chairman of Century Textiles and Industries and was active in business since the age of 15.

    Ousted former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy died on Monday after he fainted in court following a hearing, state television reported.

    Morsy, a top figure in the Muslim Brotherhood who was the first democratically elected President in Egypt's modern history, had been in jail since he was toppled by the military in 2013 after mass protests against his rule.
