Chhattisgarh CM Launch Mobile Distribution Scheme 'Mobile Tihar' 

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh, along with National Award-winning actress Kangana Ranaut, on Monday launched a smartphone distribution scheme, 'Mobile Tihar', under the Sanchar Kranti Yojna (SKY).

The scheme is for distribution of smartphones to women and students, covering over 50 Lakh beneficiaries.

Rajasthan Signs MoU For The 1st Cow Sanctuary in State 

Rajasthan will soon have its first ‘cow sanctuary’, a shelter for 10,000 bovines spread over an area of more than 220 hectares in Bikaner district. The state government on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a private trust in this regard, during Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje’s visit to Bikaner. The cow sanctuary will be the latest in a string of initiatives announced by the BJP government in the state for the protection of bovines since it came to power in 2013. The state already has a ministry dedicated to the welfare of cows and last year it had announced a 10 per cent surcharge on stamp duty towards cow protection.

US Elevated India’s Status To STA-1 To Ease Export Controls For High-Tech Product Sales 

India today welcomed the US' decision to ease export controls for high technology product sales to it, saying the move will further boost collaboration between the two countries in defence and certain other areas. The Trump administration announced yesterday granting India the status of Strategic Trade Authorization-1 (STA-1) country, the only South Asian nation to be given the designation along with the US' NATO allies like South Korea, Australia and Japan. 

Scientists Discover New Shape 'Scutoid' From Human Cells 

Scientists have discovered a new shape called scutoid while studying nature’s way of moulding tissue to form the skin, cavity linings and the building blocks of organs.

The shape has five sides on one end and six on the other and a triangular surface on one of its longer edges. Scientists have referred to it as a twisted prism kind of shape that allows the tissue to mould around organs.

Epithelial tissue, one of the four kinds of tissue that forms the human body, is composed of epithelial cells packed together in a particular formation that has been given a nifty name: scutoid.

1st Nepal-India Think Tank Summit Begins in Kathmandu

The first 'Nepal-India Think Tank' Summit to foster greater collaboration and knowledge-sharing among the think tanks of the two countries was held in Kathmandu today.

Former Prime Minister of Nepal and Co-Chairman of ruling Nepal Communist Party, Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' inaugurated the summit. In his address Mr. Prachanda said that recent reciprocal visits of prime ministers of both the countries have created a fresh momentum in overall spectrum of bilateral relations. 

He also said that initiative of executing all bilateralagreements and understandings has generated a new wave of enthusiasm in Nepal. Delivering the key note address Bharatiya Janata Party General Secretary and Director, India Foundation Ram Madhav said that India is committed to support Nepalese Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli's ambitious development agenda.

Reliance Beats TCS to Become India's Most Valued Company 

India's richest person Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) beat Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to become the most valued company in India. 

RIL's market capitalisation during the day was Rs7.44 trillion as compared to TCS' Rs7.39 trillion. RIL had recently reported its highest ever quarterly net profit of Rs9,459 crore, for the April-June quarter. 

3rd BRICS Film Festival Concluded: Complete List of Indian Winners 

The 3rd BRICS Film Festival took place in Durban, South Africa, along with the International Durban Film Festival (DIFF). The last day of the festival (27th July) was celebrated as India Country Day, followed by Awards and Closing Ceremony. 

Surendra Rosha Named HSBC India CEO 

Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corp Ltd (HSBC) on Monday appointed Surendra Rosha as its India CEO replacing Jayant Rikhye who is on leave due to medical reasons. 

50 year old Rosha, a career HSBC banker, is currently head of HSBC's financial institutional group (FIG) for the Asia-Pacific region. 

His appointment is subject to regulatory approvals. 

 Renu Satti Quits As Paytm Payments Bank CEO 

Paytm Payments Bank CEO Renu Satti has resigned from the role and will now head Paytm’s new retail initiative.

Paytm will look for a replacement for Ms. Satti, who had taken over the CEO role last year.

Veteran Bengali Writer Ramapada Chowdhury Passes Away 

Sahitya Academy awardee Bengali writer Ramapada Chowdhury, who authored famous novels like 'Kharij', 'Bari Badle Jay' and 'Abhimanyu', passed away at a city hospital on Sunday, his family said.

Meghalaya Milk Mission Launched in Shillong 

Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Radha Mohan Singh on Saturday said that Meghalaya Milk Mission will facilitate in achieving the Centre’s goal of doubling farmer’s income by 2022 through promotion of milk business in the state.

Announcing a sanctioned project of Rs 215 crore through the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) at the launching of Meghalaya Milk Mission here on Saturday, Singh said that the amount will be utilised for various trainings under dairy farm, chilling centre and purchase of milk animals.

Indian Railways Launches ‘Mission Satyanishtha’ 

Starting Friday, all the 13 lakh employees of the Indian Railways will take turns to swear an oath publicly to “bring about integrity” and “eradicate corruption” – beginning with the top brass and carrying on to the lowest levels in the organistion throughout the year.

Termed “Mission Satyanishtha”, the program will involve railwaymen attending formal training course on probity and integrity in public life. On Friday, the Railway Board members and all senior officers of the ministry will swear the oath of ethics and integrity in the presence of Union Minister Piyush Goyal, Central Vigilance Commissioner KV Chowdry and others.

Invest India and UAE Ministry Sign MoU for Technological Cooperation 

Invest India and the UAE Minister for Artificial Intelligence (AI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for India - UAE Artificial Intelligence Bridge today in New Delhi. This partnership will generate an estimated USD 20 billion in economic benefits during the next decade for both countries. The MoU will spur development across areas like Blockchain, AI and Analytics as data and processing will be a catalyst for innovation and business growth and serve as the backbone of more effective and efficient service delivery systems. By 2035 AI can potentially add USD 957 billion to the Indian economy.

NGT Forms Monitoring Committee For Clean Yamuna Project 

The National Green Tribunal today formed a monitoring committee on the cleaning of the Yamuna and directed it to submit an action plan on the issue.

A bench headed by National Green Tribunal (NGT) Chairperson A K Goel appointed retired expert member B S Sajwan and former Delhi chief secretary Shailaja Chandra as members of the committee while directing them to submit an action plan by September and a detailed report in the matter by December 31.

Dharmendra Pradhan Laid Foundation Stone of Permanent Campus For NSTI, Women in Mohali 

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan today laid the foundation stone of the National Skill Training Institute (NSTI) for Women here.

At present, the NSTI operates out of a temporary campus in Rajpura.

The people of Punjab were naturally gifted in skills of various kinds and the state was a leader in many fields, the Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship said.

PM Modi Launched Projects Worth Rs60,000 crore in Lucknow

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived in Lucknow on Saturday, inaugurated 81 investment projects worth Rs 60,000 crore. This is Modi’s fifth visit in the past one month to Uttar Pradesh, a state crucial to the BJP’s prospects ahead of next year’s general elections. The projects were pledged to the state during the UP Investor’s Summit in February.

Eighty industrialists, including major firms such as Birla, Reliance and Adani, attended the ceremony alongside Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh. On Saturday, Modi laid the foundation stones and inaugurated 99 urban development projects for Uttar Pradesh worth Rs 3,897 crore. He also gave away different awards on the occasion to mark three years of the government’s flagship programmes.

High-Level Empowered Committee Formed To Address Issues of Stressed Thermal Power Projects 

The Government has decided to set up a high level empowered committee headed by cabinet secretary P K Sinha and representation from the ministries of railways, finance, power, coal and banks having major exposure to the power sector to revive stressed thermal power projects.

ET had on July 25 reported that the government may recommend more time for stressed power companies in the next hearing in Allahabad High Court on Aug 2 and is mulling setting up a high-level committee to address cross-sectoral issues including delayed payment of private power companies.

All You Need To Know About Final Draft Of NRC Released By Assam 

The government today released the final draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC) list with names of 28,983,677 citizens in Assam. However, around 40 lakh people  have been left out of the list. The first draft of the NRC process was released in December 31, last year in which around 1.9 crore people out of the total application of 3.29 crore were included.

 

International Tiger Day: 29 July 

Every year, July 29 is celebrated as the Global Tiger Day to raise awareness about the endangered big cats. It was created when 13 countries came together in 2009 and pledged to double the world’s Tiger population by 2022 -- the next "Year of the Tiger" on the Asian lunar calendar.

As per the assessment of the Status of Tigers, Co-predators and Prey (2014), the number of tigers in India is estimated at 2,226 as compared to the 2010 estimate of 1,706.

World Day against Trafficking in Persons is organized across the world by the United Nations on 30 July to Combat Trafficking in Persons, urging Governments worldwide to take coordinated and consistent measures to defeat this scourge. 

Mohun Bagan ‘Ratna’ Conferred on Pradip Chowdhury 

Pradip Choudhury, who formed the central defensive pair with Subroto Bhattacharya when Mohun Bagan took on Pele’s Cosmos team in 1977, was conferred the Mohun Bagan Ratna 2018 at the annual day of the 129-year-old club here on Sunday.

Choudhury, who got a cheque for 1 lakh, said he became more popular after switching from Bombay to Calcutta.

Yasar Dogu International, Turkey: Bajrang Punia Wins Gold 

Bajrang Punia won his second consecutive international gold while Sandeep Tomar had to be the content with a silver medal at the Yasar Dogu International as Indian wrestlers returned with 10 medals, including seven by women, from the ranking event in Istanbul, Turkey.

In the women’s competition, Pinki was the lone gold medallist in the 55kg category with her 6-3 win over Ukraine’s Olga Shnaider in the final but Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik endured a disappointing result as she failed to reach the medal round in the 62 kg category.

Prabhat Koli, 1st Asian Teen to Swim UK-France Channel 

A city college student, Prabhat Koli (19), who crossed the English Channel when he was 16, has become the first Asian to swim the choppy water from Jersey (an Island in the UK) to France in cold weather on Thursday.

The long-distance sea swimmer covered 25km in 6 hours and 54 minutes. He started off from La Coupe Point of Jersey, behind St Catherine’s backwater and touched the shore of St Germain Plage on the Normandy coast of France.
