India ranked 12th globally in ‘Women On Board 2020’ study
India has been ranked 12th in the world as per study titled ‘Women On Board 2020’. The list was topped by Norway with 40.72% women on board. A study on ‘Women On Board 2020’ has been done jointly by global recruitment tendering platforms MyHiringClub and Sarkari-Naukri. The 7824 listed companies across 36 countries were considered for the study. From India, 628 listed companies participated in an online study. The study was based on the presence of women in companies’ board globally.
Gaurav Gupta & Byju Raveendran on WEF’s Young Global Leaders list
Byju Classes’ founder Byju Raveendran and Zomato’s co-founder Gaurav Gupta are among the five Indians named by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in its new list of 115 Young Global Leaders. Raveendran, who launched Byju’s as a learning app in 2015, calls himself a teacher by choice and an entrepreneur by chance. Gupta’s Zomato has been a pioneering food technology start-up, which he launched as a table reservation business and then scaled it up across India, the UAE and Australia.
Taylor Swift named “Google’s most-searched women in music”
Google has shared the data on the most looked-up women on the Internet on the occasion of International Women’s Day i.e. on 8th of March 2020. As per the list released by the search engine, Singer Taylor Swift topped the Google’s most-searched for woman in music of 2020. It has also released the rankings in other disciplines as well namely: Sports, Comedy, Novelists.
India ranked 3rd in Hurun Global Rich List 2020
Hurun Report has released the Hurun Global Rich List 2020. The Hurun Global Rich List 2020 is a ranking of the US-Dollar billionaires in the world. The 9th edition of the Hurun Global Rich list ranked 2,816 billionaires from 71 countries and from 2,182 companies.
India ranked 77th on Sustainability Index
India has been ranked at 77th position in the Sustainability Index 2020 and 131st on the Flourishing Index 2020, according to a UN-backed report. The report commissioned by the World Health Organization (WHO), UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and The Lancet medical journal.
Norway leads the table for survival, health, education and nutrition rates – followed by South Korea and the Netherlands. The central African Republic, Chad and Somalia come at the bottom.
The Sustainability Index 2020 takes into account per capita carbon emissions and the ability of children in a nation to live healthy lives. It ranks countries on excess carbon emissions compared with the 2030 target. The Flourishing Index 2020 measures the best chance at survival and well-being for children.
Hindi becomes 3rd most spoken language in the World
Hindi is the 3rd most spoken language of the world in 2019 with 615 million speakers. The 22nd edition of the world language database Ethnologue stated English at the top of the list with 1,132 million speakers. Chinese Mandarin is at the second position with 1,117 million speakers.
Ethnologue brings out an yearly database of living languages of the world since its establishment in 1951. The current round of the database covers 7,111 living languages of the world. Ethnologue also contains data on languages which have gone out of use in recent history. This edition lists 348 such languages.
India ranks 40th in Global Intellectual Property Index 2020
India has been ranked 40th out of 53 countries on a global intellectual property index 2020. India was placed at 36th position among 50 countries in 2019. India’s score, however, increased from 36.04 per cent (16.22 out of 45) in 2019 to 38.46 per cent (19.23 out of 50) in 2020, a 2.42 per cent jump in an absolute score.
The US, UK, Sweden, France and Germany remained the top five economies on the intellectual property index in 2019 retaining their spots from the last year. The index was released as part of the annual report prepared by the Global Innovation Policy Center (GIPC) of the US Chambers of Commerce.
IIMB ranks 3 in the list of Top Business Schools of 2020
Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) has ranked 3rd in MOOCLab’s Business School Rankings 2020 for its provision, design and delivery of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). IIM Bangalore succeeds HEC Paris (France) and Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (USA).
The 2020 edition of the rankings has surveyed 16 business schools across the world offering courses on the three leading MOOC platforms: Coursera, edX and FutureLearn. This is the first-ever Business School rankings based on the provision of MOOCs.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella tops Fortune’s Businessperson of the Year 2019 list
Microsoft’s India-born Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella has occupied the top spot in Fortune’s Businessperson of the Year 2019 list. The list also includes Mastercard CEO Ajay Banga and Arista head Jayshree Ullal. Banga is ranked 8th, while Ullal comes in at the 18th spot in the list for which Fortune looked at 10 financial factors ranging from a total return to shareholders to return on capital. Both Banga and Ullal are of Indian-origin.
Fortune’s annual Businessperson of the Year list features 20 business leaders “who tackled audacious goals, overcame impossible odds, found creative solutions”.
India ranks 59th on IMD World Talent Ranking Report
India was ranked 59th among 63 countries in the 2019 IMD World Talent Ranking released by International Institute for Management Development.
This year, India slipped by 6 places as compared to 53rd rank in 2018 edition of this global annual list. India’s poor performance was on account of low quality of life and expenditure on education.
Bangladesh tops business bribery risk in South Asia
Bangladesh has the highest business bribery risk among South Asian countiers, according to the Trace Bribery Matrix which releases annual ranking for 200 countries. The Matrix evaluates countries under four parameters which are business interaction with the government, anti-bribery deterrence, transparency and civil society oversight.
Bangladesh has been placed at 178 position among 200 countries in terms of business bribery risk. It has been on the high risk country list of Trace Bribery Matrix since 2014 when the first matrix was released.
TRACE is a US based organisation which provides ranking to various countries in terms of the risk of bribery companies face in doing business in those countries.
India Justice Report 2019: Maharashtra holds top, UP ranks bottom
According to 'India Justice Report 2019', Maharashtra is the top state in delivering justice to its citizens followed by Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Punjab and Haryana in the first-ever ranking of states on their capacity to deliver justice to citizens.
The list of seven small states (population less than one crore each) was topped by Goa, followed by Sikkim and Himachal Pradesh. In this classification, Jharkhand, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are at the bottom.
The ranking is part of the India Justice Report (IJR) 2019, an initiative of Tata Trusts in collaboration with Centre for Social Justice, Common Cause, Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, DAKSH, TISS- Prayas and Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy.
The India Justice Report brings together, in the first such exercise, otherwise soiled statistics, from authoritative government sources, on the four pillars of justice delivery - police, judiciary, prisons and legal aid.
HBR’s list of 10 best performing CEOs has 3 Indian-origin CEOs
Three Indian-origin CEOs, Shantanu Narayen, Ajay Banga and Satya Nadella are among the world's top 10 best-performing chief executives, featured in a list complied by the Harvard Business Review (HBR).
Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen was ranked 6th, followed by MasterCard CEO Ajay Banga was ranked 7th and Microsoft chief Satya Nadella on the 9th spot.
The list also features India-born CEO of DBS Bank Piyush Gupta on the 89th spot. Apple CEO Tim Cook was ranked 62nd in the list. The 2019 list has 4 female CEOs in the top 50 of the rankings.
IIM Calcutta ranked 17th in the Financial Times Masters in Management Rankings
Indian Institute of Management Calcutta has secured the 17th rank globally in the 'Financial Times Masters in Management Rankings 2019'.
The institute got the ranking for its 2-Year Masters in Business Administration (formerly Post Graduate Programme in Management), an IIM (C).
The position has been advanced by six ranks this year and the institute bagged the 1st place among the five Indian B-Schools listed in the rankings.
This elevation in the ranking is a reflection of the quality of education provided by the institute and the final outcome of successful employment among the 2-Year MBA programme's alumni.
Bill Gates overtakes Jeff Bezos as the world’s richest person
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates overtook Jeff Bezos to become the world’s richest person. Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos lost the title as the world’s richest man to Bill Gates, after losing nearly $7 billion in stock value leaving his net worth to $103.9 billion. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is currently worth $105.7 billion.
Bezos ended Gates’ 24-year run as the richest man in 2018 and became the first man on earth with a net worth of $160 billion. Bill Gates debuted on Forbes’ first ever billionaire list in 1987 with a net worth of $1.25 billion.
India ranked 63rd in World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business Ranking
India has moved 14 places to be 63rd among 190 nations in the World Bank’s ease of doing business ranking.
The country was 77th among 190 countries in the previous ranking last year.
IIT-Bombay again tops this year’s QS India University Rankings 2020
The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) has topped the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) India University Rankings 2020 released. Six other IITs have also made it to the list of top 10 institutes.
Bengaluru’s Indian Institute of Science has been ranked second followed by the IITs in Delhi, Madras, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Roorkee, and Guwahati. The University of Hyderabad (8) and the University of Delhi (7) are the only two central varsities among the top 10 institutes.
NCRB releases Crime in India Report 2017
The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) released its 2017 data for crime in India on October 21. The data, delayed by about a year, presents some interesting findings.
The data that was supposed to be published under the new sub-heads of mob lynching, murder by influential people, killing ordered by khap panchayats and murder committed for religious reasons.
