Veteran trade union leader Sharad Rao passed away on 1 September 2016 in Mumbai. Rao is acknowledged for his role in mobilising the work force in both the organised and unorganised sectors.

Rao was associated with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).He also served as the leader of Mumbai Autorickshawsmen’s union, the largest rickshaw union in the city.
