PR Sreejesh becomes second Indian to win World Games Athlete of the Year 2021 award

Indian men's hockey team goalkeeper, PR Sreejesh was named World Games Athlete of the Year 2021 on January 31, 2022. He became the first Indian male athlete and second Indian sportsperson overall to win the honour.

Indian women's hockey team captain Rani Rampal was the first Indian to win the World Games Athlete of the Year honour in 2020 .

PR Sreejesh was an integral part of the Indian men's hockey team that won the bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics 2020. The 33-year-old beat Spain's sport climbing Olympic champion Alberto Ginés López and Italian wushu player Michele Giordano to win the World Games Athlete of the Year 2021 award.

New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell awarded with ICC Spirit of Cricket

New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell has been named the winner of the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award. Mitchell won the award for his gesture in New Zealand's semi-final match against England in the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup in Abu Dhabi. Daryl Mitchell has become the fourth New Zealand player to win the ICC award after Daniel Vettori, Brendon McCullum and Kane Williamson. He won the award for refusing to take a single in the high-pressure T20 World Cup semi-final on November 10, 2021.

Padma Awards 2022: Gen Bipin Rawat, Neeraj Chopra among awardees; Full list of Padma Awards recipients

Padma Awards 2022 winners: The Home Ministry on January 25, 2022, announced the list of recipients of the Padma Awards which is one of the highest civilian awards of India. Padma Awards 2022 has been conferred upon a total of 128 people in three categories- Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri. The three Padma Awards are later conferred by the President of India at a ceremonial function that will be held at Rashtrapati Bhawan around March or April every year.

Some of the eminent names announced for Padma Awards 2022 are India’s first Chief of Defence Staff Bipin Rawat who died in December 2021 in a horrific chopper crash. He has been honoured posthumously with Padma Vibhushan.

Olympic Gold Medalist Neeraj Chopra and Singer Sonu Nigam have been awarded Padma Shri while the heads of Microsoft and Google Satya Nadella and Sundar Pichai have been named for Padma Bhushan.

Rashtriya Bal Puraskar 2022 Winners List

Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually interacted with the winners of Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar for the years 2021 and 2022. A total of 29 children were honored with the Rashtriya Bal Puraskar 2022 and they were selected from all regions across India for their outstanding achievement in social service, sports, innovation, bravery, art and culture, and scholastic.

RedInk Awards 2021 winners: Danish Siddiqui named ‘Journalist of the Year’

The Redink Awards for Excellence in Journalism 2021 were presented on December 29, 2021, by Mumbai Press Club with the Chief Justice of India NV Ramana as a Chief Guest at the virtual event. Photojournalist Danish Siddiqui, who died during an assignment in Afghanistan in July 2021, was posthumously awarded as the ‘Journalist of the Year’ by the Mumbai Press Club.

Chief Justice NV Ramana presented the prestigious Redink Award to Danish Siddiqui for his spectrum of investigative and impactful news photography. The award of ‘Journalist of the Year’ was received by Siddiqui’s wife Frederike Siddiqui.

Mumbai Press Club also awarded the Red ink awards 2021 to various other journalists. They were honoured in 12 categories for their ethics and hard work in the field of Journalism.

Ramanujan Prize 2021: Neena Gupta becomes fourth Indian mathematician to win coveted Maths award

Indian Mathematician Neena Gupta became the fourth Indian and third woman to win Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians 2021. Gupta was honoured with the 2021 DST-ICTP-IMU Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians from developing countries.

Neena Gupta is a mathematician at the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata. She has won the Ramanujan Prize 2021 for her outstanding work in affine algebraic geometry and commutative algebra.

The 2021 Ramanujan Prize is jointly awarded by the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (Trieste, Italy), International Mathematical Union (IMU) and the department of science and technology under the Government of India.

PM Modi honoured with Bhutan's highest civilian award - Ngadag Pel gi Khorlo

Highest Civilian Award of Bhutan: Bhutan conferred Prime Minister Modi with the country's Highest Civilian Award- Ngadag Pel gi Khorlo on December 17, 2021. The Head of the State of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk pronounced Prime Minister Modi’s name for the highly prestigious civilian decoration of Bhutan and also highlighted the unconditional friendship between India and Bhutan. The neighbouring country also acknowledged the support that India provided to Bhutan during the COVID-19 pandemic under PM Modi’s leadership.

Defence Minister gives Raksha Mantri Awards for Excellence 2021

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh conferred Raksha Mantri Awards for Excellence 2021 on the 96th Raising day of Directorate General Defence Estates.

The recipients have been awarded for their innovation and digital achievements in the fields of education, health and sanitation along with public service and land management.

A new award has been instituted by the Union Defence Minister for achievement in the implementation of the ‘e-Chhawani’ project.

Royal Gold Medal 2022: Indian architect Balkrishna Doshi wins world’s highest honour for Architecture

Balkrishna Doshi, an acclaimed architect from India has won ‘Royal Gold Medal 2022’ which is one of the world’s highest honours for Architecture. The news of Balkrishna Doshi winning the honour was announced by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). In a statement, the institute said that 94-years old Doshi, with a 70-year career and over 100 built projects has influenced the direction of architecture in India and its adjacent regions through both his teaching and practice.

Neena Gupta, Indian mathematician, receives Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians 2021

A mathematician at the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata, Professor Neena Gupta, has been awarded the ‘2021 DST-ICTP-IMU Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians from Developing Countries’.

Neena Gupta has been awarded for her outstanding work in affine algebraic geometry and commutative algebra. As per the Ministry of Science and Technology, Professor Gupta is the 3rd woman to receive the Ramanujan Prize.

Ramanujan Prize was first awarded in 2005. It is administered by the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Customs jointly with Science and Technology Department and the International Mathematical Union.

2021 Anti-corruption Champions Award: Malawi's Martha Chizuma named among 12 Anti-corruption Champions

The US State Department of State has named 12 new Anti-corruption Champions who have demonstrated leadership, courage and impact in preventing, exposing, and combating corruption. The names were announced on the eve of International Anticorruption Day and the Summit for Democracy.

The central theme of Summit for Democracy convened by US President Joe Biden was combating corruption. The Summit seeks to bring together nations to learn from each other about what works best in fighting corruption and how to address the shortcomings.

This is the second group of International Anticorruption Champions. The International Anti-Corruption Champions Award was constituted in February 2021 when an Indian Social Activist Anjali Bharadwaj was named among the first group of 12 courageous individuals.

Jnanpith Award 2021: Nilmani Phookan, Damodar Mauzo bag top literary honour

Eminent Assamese Poet Nilmani Phookan Jr. has won the 56th Jnanpith Award while the 57th Jnanpith Award has gone to the Konkani novelist Damodar Mauzo. Jnanpith Awards, India’s highest literary honour is bestowed on the writers for their outstanding contribution to the Literature.

56th Jnanpith Award is announced for 2020 and the 57th Jnanpith Award is announced for the year 2021. Both Phookan and Mauzo are the winners of the Sahitya Akademi Award and are known for their significant contribution to the respective regional literature. Damodar Mauzo is based out of Majorda, Goa and Nilmani Phookan is from Guwahati, Assam.

Gallantry Awards 2021

Abhinandan Varthaman, Indian Air Force ace pilot Group Captain, was accorded Vir Chakra by the President of India Ram Nath Kovind in an investiture ceremony. Abhinandan Varthaman has received Vir Chakra for shooting down a Pakistani F-16 fighter aircraft during aerial combat on February 27, 2019, a day after the Balakot airstrike.

Kannada actor Puneeth Rajkumar to be honoured with prestigious Karnataka Ratna Award posthumously

The Chief Minister of Karnataka Basavaraj Bommai announced on November 16, 2021, that Kannada film star Puneeth Rajkumar will be conferred with the ‘Karnataka Ratna Award’ posthumously. Puneeth Rajkumar passed away on October 29, 2021, due to cardiac arrest at the age of 46.

Puneeth Rajkumar, considered the Kannada Cinema’s reigning star, will be the 10th recipient of the state’s highest civilian order. Puneeth was the youngest of 5 children of matinee idol Dr. Rajkumar.

Padma Awards 2021

President Ram Nath Kovind on November 9, 2021, conferred the recipients of 2021 Padma Awards at a ceremonial function at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. On November 8, the President had conferred the winners of Padma Awards 2020 which included names such as Kangana Ranaut and Karan Johar.

Shinzo Abe, the former PM of Japan, SP Balasubramaniam (Posthumous) have been honoured with Padma Vibhushan while Tarun Gogoi (Posthumous) and Ram Vilas Paswan (Posthumous) are among the 10 recipients of Padma Bhushan.

Two Indian Army officers receive Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award

Two Indian Army officers Lieutenant Colonel Servesh Dhadwal and Colonel Amit Bisht have been awarded the prestigious Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award 2020 by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award is the highest adventure sports honour in India that is awarded annually by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

WHO Chief Tedros Ghebreyesus honoured with Nizami Ganjavi Award

World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus and UN Geneva Office Director-General Tatiana Valovaya were honoured with the Nizami Ganjavi International Award on November 4, 2021.

The Nizami Ganjavi International Awards were presented during the 8th Global Baku Forum titled “The World After #COVID19”. The awards were organised by the Nizami Ganjavi International Center under the chairmanship of Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev.

Booker Prize 2021: South African Novelist Damon Galgut wins Booker for his novel ‘The Promise’

Damon Galgut, a South African novelist, on November 3, 2021, won the 2021 Booker Prize for his novel ‘The Promise’. It was one of the six shortlisted novels for the Booker Prize and stood out for its artistry and scope.

The novelist who was shortlisted for two of his previous books received one of the most prestigious literary awards for his cutting depiction of a white family in a post-apartheid South Africa. Damon Galgut was also shortlisted twice before, in 2003 and 2010.
