The origin of the Zakir Husain Delhi College can be traced to the closing years of the 17th Century, with the founding of a Madrasa by Ghaziuddin Khan, one of the Emperor Aurangzeb’s leading Deccan commanders and the father of the first Nizam of Hyderabad. The complex containing his tomb, a mosque and a Madrasa, can be visited today outside the Ajmeri Gate near the Dargah of the 13th century Sufi, Hazrat Hafiz Sadullah.

Satyawati College, a constituent College of the University of Delhi, was established in the year 1972 by the Government of Delhi. The College is named after a great freedom fighter, Behen (Sister) Satyawati, grand­-daughter of Swami Shradhanand, who worked in close association with leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawahar Lal Nehru, Jai Prakash Narain and Sarojini Naidu. She worked tirelessly till her death for uprooting poverty, ignorance and communalism.

Dr. Zakir Husain, after whom this college is named, was the President of India from 1967 to 1969. He was a freedom fighter and an eminent educationist who was closely associated with Mahatma Gandhi. He chaired the Committee to formulate the scheme of basic education following the Wardha Educational Conference in 1937. He was also an acclaimed author and was awarded the highest national honour - Bharat Ratna - in 1963.
