Mannargudi or Raja Mannarkoil which derives its name from the Presiding Deity of the town Sri Rajagopalaswamy is a century old Municipality in the heart of the old undivided Thanjavur District and which is now one of the important towns of Thiruvarur district.

Affiliated to Bharatidasan University, Swami Dayananda College of Arts & Science, Manjakkudi is at par with international educational institutions. With 80% of its students being first generation learners, it has encouraged and spread the value of education across 300 villages from which its students come from.

With the combined effort of Government of TamilNadu and Bharathidasan University, Bharathidasan University Model College is started at Thiruthuraipoondi,Thiruvarur District.It is inaugurated by Hon’ble Chief Minister of TamilnaduPuratchiThalaivi, Dr.J.Jayalalitha, on 18th July 2011.

This college was started in 1970-1971 under the name 'Kalaignar Karunanidhi Government Arts College'. The then district collector of composite Thanjavur Mr.T.V.Andhoni, I.A.S., and his officials extended their helping hand to start college at the time. The college offering Pre University courses initially started functioning in the precincts of Thiyagaraja Temple, Tiruvarur.

Mannai Rajagopalaswami Government Arts College, Mannargudi was established in 1971.
