As early as in the beginning of the 20th century, the Diocese of Quilon established religious and educational institutions not only for Catholics, but all sections of society. But when the new dioceses of Kottar, Trivandrum and Punalur were carved out of the territory of the Diocese of Quilon, many institutions under its jurisdiction were handed over to the newly constituted Dioceses.

The college established August 1981 by the Government of Kerala meeting the long cherished dream of the natives of Chavara and its surrounding regions. It is located at Sankaramangalam around 14 Kms North of Kollam City, on the side of National Highway 47. It is the only Govt. College in the district Kollam. A team of socially dedicated personalities had strived hard to make this dream a reality.

Mannaniya College of Arts and Science is an outstanding educational institution affiliated to the University of Kerala. Started in 1995 at Pangode, a remote and underdeveloped village, 50 kilometers east of Thiruvanathapuram, owes its existence to the far sighted vision of Jamiya Mannaniya Islamiya charitable society, a body of Muslim religious scholars.
