An ophthalmologist takes care of the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. They also help in the visual system and in the prevention of eye disease and injury. They can totally deliver eye care to the patients. The eye and its surrounding areas can be affected by a number of clinical conditions. Ophthalmology involves diagnosis and therapy of such conditions, along with microsurgery. An ophthalmologist will take care of the vision and health of an eye. Ophthalmology is a very rare specialty .There are also many other sub-specialties of Ophthalmology ,which focus on certain diseases or parts of eyes.
With the rise in diseases such as diabetes there has been an increase in diseases such as glaucoma. Other commonly seen diseases are cataract, retinopathy etc .Especially in the present world of digital technology more people are falling ill with their poor eyesight. Therefore, ophthalmology is a very good field where there is a lot of advancements happening in and out.
The student must pass 12th std with major subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology to write the NEET exam (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test). NEET exam will determine the eligibility of a person to pursue MBBS course.
Step 1 Enroll for MBBS course in a recognized Medical college after passing NEET medical entrance exam.
Step 2 After finishing the course , pass the NEET PG medical entrance for Ophthalmology .
Step 3 Complete the three years long MD Course in Ophthalmology.
Step 4 After completing MD you will have to pursue 3 years long DM in Ophthalmology course. After which you will become Ophthalmologist.
An ophthalmologist can work in eye care centres. There are plenty of eye care hospitals in every nook and corner. They can even start their own private clinics. An ophthalmologist can also work as a teaching faculty in a medical university.
The salary of an ophthalmologist can range from Rs 30,000-Rs 35,000.It will differ according to places and expertise.
